At Johnson Subaru of Cary, our customers in Morrisville have often already chosen to purchase a new Subaru. The hard part is often choosing between the different models. One factor that some people are looking for is towing capacity. Maybe you have a small boat on a trailer to tow or a small camping trailer. We want to help you make the choice of Subaru that has the maximum towing capacity that will meet your family’s needs.

Which Types of Vehicles?

Subaru has SUVs, sedans, and performance vehicles in its lineup. The sedans and performance vehicles are not tow-rated. We will look at the SUVs in the lineup at their tow ratings.

Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is Subaru’s crossover SUV. It is the smallest SUV in their lineup. Its maximum towing capacity across trim models is 1,500 pounds. The only exception is that the Hybrid Crosstrek is tow rated at a maximum of 1,000 pounds.

Subaru Forester

Next in size comes the Subaru Forester. It is rated at 1,500 pounds for towing across the trim models. The one exception is the Wilderness model. The latter is rated at double the maximum towing potential – 3,000 pounds. This is the special edition of the Forester that has extra off-road features and enhancements.

Subaru Outback

The well-loved Outback is a bit longer and wider than the Forester. The Forester is about two inches higher because of its upright styling. The Outback is rated at a maximum towing capacity of 2,700 pounds across most trim levels. At the highest four trim levels, including the Outback’s Wilderness edition, the Outback is capable of a maximum of 3,500 pounds of towing capacity around Durham and beyond.

Subaru Ascent

The Ascent is a seven- or eight-passenger SUV with three rows of seating, depending upon the trim model. At its base model, it can tow a maximum of 2,000 pounds. At every other trim level, it can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds.

As you can see, the larger the SUV, the more the maximum towing capacity increases. Also, Subaru SUVs are capable of towing smaller trailers and more around Raleigh. It all depends upon the model and trim level.
