The Subaru WRX is a shining example of just how slick and fast a sedan can be: from its origins as a spinoff to the Subaru Impreza to its current status as a high-performance sedan, the Subaru WRX was made for speed. The Subaru WRX STI model exemplifies all of the performance that this sedan provides and shows off its motorsports background. Let's take a look at what this high-performance sedan can do to unlock the speedster in all of us, then you can come test drive one here at Johnson Subaru of Cary!

What does "WRX STI" Mean?

That's a lot of acronyms for a car name, but the origins of these acronyms can be found in the now-26-year history. The Subaru WRX was first developed by the Subaru corporation in the early 1990s, based off of the Subaru Impreza, as a competitive model in World Rally Cross racing championships. The name itself stands for "World Rally eXperimental" or is even simply referred to as "World Rally Cross," in some parts of the world for the crossing lines that form an "X." The first WRX versions were manufactured as the ideal rallying vehicles, complete with a stiffer suspension, all-wheel drive and turbocharged inline four-cylinder engines.

The STI model of the Subaru WRX was developed in 1994, for all Subaru vehicles, by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), a division of the Subaru Corporation that specializes in motorsport vehicles today, STI (or "STi" as it was labeled after 2006) exists as a trim level for other Subaru models, such as the WRX and Subaru Legacy, in order to make them more powerful and high-performance, complete with upgraded suspension, six-speed manual transmission, driver-controlled center differential, turbocharged engines and lightweight aluminum alloy wheels.

The Subaru WRX STI of Today, Ready for Speed in Morrisville!

The Subaru WRX STI, as it exists today, is one of the fastest and slickest Subaru sedans that we have in our inventory here at Johnson Subaru of Cary. This version runs on a 2.5-liter, 305 horsepower turbocharged 16-valve engine, which generates 290 pound-feet of torque and is accompanied by a six-speed manual transmission for a dynamic and controlled acceleration, similar to a motor sports car. The Subaru WRX STI retains a lot of the same characteristics that made these models exceptional on the race track, with a few adjustments for optimal traction and handling. The 2021 Subaru WRX STI features sport-tuned suspension, speed-sensing steering and the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which is one of the highest-rated all-wheel drive systems by consumers and experienced motorists alike.
